Get Hushpiper

Installing on Android, step by step

Hushpiper isn't in Google Play yet, so Android asks a few extra questions the first time. It takes about a minute.

1. Tap "Download for Android" on your phone. Chrome may say "File might be harmful": tap Download anyway. It says this about every app that doesn't come from Google Play.
2. When the download finishes, tap "Open". If you missed it, open the Files app, then Downloads, and tap hushpiper.apk.
3. Android may say "For your security, your phone is not allowed to install unknown apps from this source". Tap Settings, turn on Allow from this source, then go back.
4. Tap Install. If Google Play Protect says it doesn't recognise the app, tap More details, then Install anyway. If it offers to scan the app, you can let it: that's fine too.
5. Tap Open. Choose New, pick a username and a password, and write down your 12 recovery words somewhere safe. They are the only way back into your account if you lose your password.
6. Allow notifications when asked, so messages and calls reach you when the app is closed.

Updating

Hushpiper tells you when a new version is ready: tap Update, then install the download over the old one. Your chats, contacts and settings stay. You can also download the newest version from this page at any time and install it the same way.

If it doesn't install

• "App not installed": an older test copy of Hushpiper (or of "Messaging") may be on the phone. Uninstall it (Settings, Apps), then install again.
• Nothing happens when you tap the file: open it from the Files app instead of the browser's list of downloads.
• "There was a problem parsing the package": the download stopped part way. Delete it and download again, on Wi-Fi if you can.
